Land Travel
Coming Up From the US/Canadian Border?
Starting from the Canadian side of the border just after getting off of the Peace Bridge at Buffalo, N.Y.:
- Take the QEW Highway to Exit 100 to access 407 ETR EAST just south of Toronto. (about 60 miles)
- Follow 407 ETR East to exit 66 (the 400 North Barrie exit). (about 40 miles)
- Take 400 North towards Sudbury to Parry Sound. (about 60 miles).
- Just north of Barrie 400 N will bear to the right and becomes 69 North.
- Use Parry Sound exit 224 to purchase groceries/supplies at Walmart or Sobeys.
- Get back on 400 N/69 N towards Sudbury (about 40 miles)
- There are two First Nation gas stations on the left side of highway 69 just north of Parry Sound where you can purchase pretty cheap gasoline.
To Smith’s Marina:
- After crossing the Key River Bridge, within 5 miles, you will exit onto Settler’s Rd / Lower Pickerel River Rd.
- At the STOP sign, continue straight onto Settlers Rd (which is the old 69 N).
- After about 2 miles, turn left onto the Pickerel and Lower French River Rd. (which is just before the Pickerel River Bridge).
- Smith’s is the first right.
To Hartley Bay Marina:
- Continue on Settlers Rd over the Pickerel River and French River Bridges. Just past the French River Trading Post on your left Hartley Bay Rd will be on your left.
- Turn LEFT onto Hartley Bay Road – follow gravel road 9 miles (14.5 km) to the end which will be Hartley Bay Marina.
Valet parking at the Hartley Bay Marina. (For the Marina's launching and parking fees)
Coming From the West
- From Sault Ste. Marie, take Highway 17 East approximately 298 km or 185 miles to Sudbury, Ontario.
- Take Highway 69 South/New 400 South approximately 100 km or 60 miles to Hartley Bay Road.
- Just past the Bear’s Den Lodge sign, turn right onto Hartley Bay Road.
- Follow Hartley Bay Road approximately 14.5 km or 9 miles to Hartley Bay Marina.
- For Smith’s Marina: Continue past Hartley Bay Road.
- Cross the French River and Pickerel River bridges.
- Turn right onto Pickerel River and Lower French River Road immediately after the Pickerel River Bridge.
- Take the first right into Smith’s Marina.
Traveler’s Alert
- Boat gasoline is available at Hartley Bay Marina.
- The French River Provincial Park contains uncharted waterways. Hydrographic/topographic navigation maps MAY NOT BE AVAILABLE.

Flying to Canada: Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA)
*According to the Government of Canada:
- New entry requirement now in effect: visa-exempt foreign nationals who fly to or transit through Canada need an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA).
- Exceptions include: U.S. citizens and travellers with a valid Canadian visa. Canadian citizens, including dual citizens, and Canadian permanent residents cannot apply for an eTA.
- Use the Government of Canada’s official website to apply for an eTA. It only costs $7 CAD. Most eTA applications are approved within minutes of applying.
